SSC or Staff Selection Commission – A Few FAQ For Your Information And Guidance

For those who are new to this experience but still want to fulfil their dream of getting a job in SSC, here are a few FAQs about the Staff Selection Commission

It is the entrance exams that drive our country’s employment and education framework. With India sharing more than 60% of the demographic dividend, it is obvious that you may find a beeline for people aspiring for jobs, no matter what level it is. And the application for a job in the public sector or a government job certainly exceeds a million. The condition is worse for jobs in Staff Selection Commission. This situation of competition calls for some serious preparatory efforts with both offline and online preparation for SSC exam, which will help the aspirants to break the repetitiveness in approach and makes the overall preparation interesting and informative rather than soporific.

Ques1. What are the various posts for which the Staff Selection Commission conducts competitive exams and what are the basic qualifications needed to appear for the same?

Ans. The various posts here include:
a) For graduate level – auditors, assistants, junior accountants, divisional accountants, upper division clerks, inspectors of excise, income tax, sub-inspectors in central police organizations like CRPF, CISF, CBI, BSF, SSB and ITBP, section officer (audit or commercial).
b) For matric level – Stenographer with Grade ‘C’ and ‘D’ and lower divisional clerks.
Then there are some selection posts (applications invited through advertisements) for which direct interviews are done. These are not fixed posts and the vacancies are reported to the commission as and when required. The posts here include: information assistant, statistical assistant, store keeper, etc.

Ques2. What is the basic SSC exam structure or scheme?
Ans. Staff Selection Commission conducts combined graduation level and matric level examinations every year for the posts mentioned in Ques1. The basic qualification for these posts is graduation and matric respectively. The written exam has two parts – Prelims and Mains. The aspirants who qualify for the prelims need to appear for the Mains and those who qualify for the mains finally appear for the interview. However, for the matric level posts, the candidates have to appear and pass a skill test, which includes – the stenography test or the typing test (a required skill for the post). Then there are a few posts like – investigators and section officers that have a somewhat different pattern, as these exams are held separately and for these posts, no prelims are required.

Ques3. What are the age limits and age relaxations for SSC examinations?
Ans. There are different constraints concerning age limits for different posts and need to be confirmed from the exam notice advertised by the Commission.
a) However, the general age limit is 18-27 years as on a specific date.
b) Age relaxations for different categories like – for SCs/STs – there is a relaxation of 5 years in the upper age limit. Similarly, it is three years for OBCs and ten years for physically challenged.
c) Age relaxation for widows, judicially separated and divorced women – Age limit is 35 for general category, 40 for SC/St and 38 for OBC.
d) For Ex-servicemen and Departmental candidates – Exam notice should be consulted.

Ques 4. Is there a way to adjust the date of the interview if it conflicts with another exam?
Ans. Generally, no change of day or date is permissible. However, if the interview is being held at a specific venue for more than one day, the candidate can request for change but this request should be made at least 10 days in advance and should be supported by the necessary documents.

Ques5. What to do if in the result sheet shows the candidate’s name and roll number under the wrong category?
Ans. For such situations, the candidate is expected to inform the commission immediately and the SSC will re-determine his/her result in the actually applied category.
